Design Capturing Methods

PART ONE - How can we capture everyday design?

Instructions

Step 1

Take 3 minutes and brainstorm a list of methods to capture design.

Step 2

Create affinity groupings of your list of capturing methods. If you are doing this exercise in a group, compile your lists from step one and create affinity groupings together.

PART TWO - What are the tradeoffs of different capture methods?

Instructions

Step 1

Take 3 minutes and brainstorm a list of tradeoffs or potential drawbacks to different capturing methods. As you do this part, think about influencing factors such as the environment of the design task, the resources you would have to use, time, etc.

Step 2

Create affinity groupings of your list of capturing methods tradeoffs. If you are doing this exercise in a group, compile your lists from step 1 and create affinity groupings together.

PART THREE - Considering and comparing different ways to capture

Instructions

Step 1

Pick a design activity that you would like to use as an example for part three of the exercise (i.e painting, cooking, designing a website).

Step 2

Choose one of the graphs below and place different capture methods on the graph based on how they correspond to each consideration/tradeoff.

Step 3

Looking at the graphs, choose a capture method that most closely aligns with the design activity you chose in step one. Choose what criteria you might want to consider when you are deciding on a capture method.
